What is the difference between entering into one-to-one coaching and therapy?

Coaching focuses on the “how” to find alternative solutions to a challenge whereas therapy deals with a person’s emotions and sense of well-being.

How long does coaching take? 
That depends on the objectives set at the outset. Coaching can be short – 5 or 6 sessions but can also take 10-12 sessions to work through. In all cases it is rare for coaching to last for more than 6 months.

How is confidentiality preserved during coaching? 
Everything is confidential in coaching apart from the definition of objectives.

What can coaching do for me as I take up a new post?
It will give you the means to establish your legitimacy in your new job as regards your peers and colleagues as much as regards your superiors or in relation to the company clients.

I feel harassed in my job, is coaching a possible answer?
Yes, on condition that the harassment issue is known and shared amongst all parties being coached, including the HR department.

When will I see that my coaching has been successful? 
This will be obvious when you see that you succeed in developing a new dynamic in completing professional assignments totally autonomously.

What makes coaching different from training? 
Coaching develops the inner resources already present and presupposes that the client is adequately competent to complete his assignments. Training aims to provide the client with skills and competence he doesn’t already possess.

What are the qualities of a good coach?
An empathetic approach creates a secure environment and some confrontation challenges the client to achieve his objectives.

Why do team coaching?
To collectively inspire a team to learn how to work in a different way in order to achieve its goals.

What is needed to have a successful team coaching? 
The team leader needs to be perceived as the legitimate team leader by his team, but he also needs to have confidence that his team will find solutions to challenges by itself.

What is the difference between team building and team coaching?
Team coaching enables a team to work on the way it functions when it has a shared aim which is agreed by the team itself. Team building strengthens the team when it works on goals set by the team leader and puts the team in line with its leader’s and the organisation’s perspectives.

What are the qualities of a good team coach? 
A good team coach understands the whole organisation to which his client belongs. He makes it possible to contractualise the change with the team. He protects the legitimacy of the leader. He is strict about enforcing the action plan and following up the conclusion.

What is the contribution made by the coach to the team he supports?
The coach facilitates team management. He gives a sense of direction which fosters commitment. He enables what was previously seen as impossible to be possible.

What are the performance indicators of successful team coaching?
The coach and the team will see energy levels and team relations grow. The team’s commitment to the implementation of the action plan for change which it set itself is crucial.

Are there any risks for a manager in performing team coaching? 
No, unless the mandate for the team is not clear and transparent, or if the leader is not perceived to be legitimate by the team or if the team do not trust him.

When can we do team coaching?
When an organisation wants to set up a competent, operational team within a background of organisational change in the company and wants to foster a sense of ownership of team aims and objectives.
